Twenty Days

Lonnie Dupre spent a total of twenty days on the highest mountain peak in North America. Due to extremely poor weather, seven of the twenty days were in a cramped 4×4 snow cave at the 14,200ft camp. With no weather window in sight, Lonnie had no choice but to return to base camp.

The descent was fraught with life and death circumstances. At one point wind knocked Lonnie off his feet and forced him to self-arrest in order to prevent sliding down hundreds of feet.

Monday afternoon Paul Rodrick of Talkeetna Air Taxi, Stevie and I flew into base camp, but not before making a quick stop to deliver various necessities to a wonderful Japanese photographer, Norio Matsumoto. He is spending a couple of months photographing Denali range and northern lights.

About an hour after take off from Talkeetna we finally landed at base camp, it was wonderful to see Lonnie again, safe and sound.

Polar Climb 1

Lonnie Dupre, polar explorer, begins his second attempt at summiting Denali in January.

Poor weather delayed departure for two days. Flight from Talkeetna, Alaska to basecamp on Kahiltna Glacier of Denali took approximatily thirty minutes. Temperature at basecamp was -5F.

Upon landing, we were greeted by Masatoshi Kuriaki. Known as Japanese Caribou, Masatoshi is attempting to summit Mount Hunter this winter.

Coming Home

Lonnie Dupre, polar explorer, will be first to attempt a solo ascent of Denali in month of January.

I met with Lonnie and Stevie at Seattle airport where the three of us flew into Anchorage. Our base of operation is Talkeetna, hundred miles north of Anchorage and at the edge of Denali park.

As soon as weather permits, Lonnie will be flown to Kahiltna glacier at base of the mountain. Once he begins his journey, daily updates will be posted to his site.

This has been my first week in Alaska.

Ceremony unveiling signs for Officer Chris Kilcullen Memorial Highway, and honoring his service and family.

Senate Bill 987, supported by Lane County’s entire legislative delegation was passed and signed by Oregon’s governor. It designates the Officer Chris Kilcullen Memorial Highway to run from Interstate 105 starting at W. 6th Avenue in Eugene, running north and then east to Interstate 5, where it turns into Highway 126, and continuing east to where it joins Main Street in Springfield. The stretch of highway was significant in officer Kilcullen’s life as it was an area he frequently patrolled as a member of the Traffic Enforcement Unit, the route he followed for his daily commute and encompasses the location where ultimately he lost his life.

Along with the renaming, the stretch of highway will be memorialized by four large signs that will be placed along the route.
